Overview

We were commissioned to construct a state-of-the-art sporting complex that would accommodate a wide range of sports played at Toowoomba Grammar School.

The Glen McCracken Sports Centre is the largest project that the school has undertaken since it was founded in 1875.

The scope of the project included a ground floor synthetic surfaced/cricket netted court areas, two full-sized basketball courts, three volleyball courts, and nine badminton courts. It also houses additional leaseable space and offices for the Sports Department's teaching staff.

Challenges

This project consisted of demolishing an existing building and removing placed demountables that sat within the new building’s footprint.

Work on this project involved the removal of 14,000CBM of material and the construction of a 13m high retaining wall. The existing crib wall behind the school’s aquatic centre was partly dismantled and then rebuilt to align with the new retaining wall.

Other challenges we faced throughout the project include:

  • Inclement weather

  • Latent ground conditions

  • Additional structural elements missed from design

  • Added and altered scope from client

Innovations

The Glen McCracken Sports Centre project included several areas where we introduced innovations and our methodology to provide a safer construction method and quality outcomes.

  • Providing tower crane for construction work as limited space, access and reach for mobile cranes.

  • Suspended slab and Bondek installation over structural steel carried out under strict safety procedures and controls.

  • Suspended slab night pour of 375M3 to avoid congestion around the school precinct during the day.

Conclusion

We’re extremely proud to be involved with the largest project the Toowoomba Grammar School has undertaken since its foundation in 1875.

This state-of-the-art facility was completed in three phases: demolition, earthworks, and construction, all requiring specialised construction skills and technical demands.
