Overview
The Soldiers Memorial Hall is a heritage-listed memorial to commemorate service people from Toowoomba and the local district.
Northbuild was commissioned to restore the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall while conserving and replicating the historical significance of the building’s original 1924 architecture.
Work commenced at the site from 8th November 2021 and working closely with local subcontractors and suppliers, the project was completed in October 2022.
Challenges
Because of the heritage status of the building, we had to maintain compliance with strict guidelines set by the State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA), Heritage Architects Heritage Impact Statement and The Heritage Conservation Management Plan.
This project required extensive removal of asbestos in all ceiling sheeting which was replaced in line with the recorded heritage architect. While keeping to the building’s original design, the project needed to be compliant with current standards for people with a disability.
In the vicinity of the site to the Toowoomba CBD, we took careful measures to safely redirect foot traffic, plan works to avoid congestion and minimise risk.
Innovations
We introduced the following innovations during construction to maintain the Soldiers Memorial Hall's historical significance:
Providing alternative nosing, handrails, and tactile indicators to minimise ongoing maintenance.
Stainless steel handrails to alleviate extreme delays with hot-dip galvanised handrails.
In-situ stairs installed to save time and minimise impact on traffic.
To minimise maintenance of the awning glass, we changed to vinyl lettering and laminated the frosting and letters as an interlayer between the glazing layers.
Conclusion
We’re proud to have been involved with the Soldiers Memorial Hall Upgrade Project and to have brought new life to what was an important demonstration of the pattern and evolution of Queensland’s history.
