Leading Queensland building contractor Northbuild Construction is progressing in the demanding three stage re-development and refurbishment of The Prince Charles Hospital based in Chermside on Brisbane’s north.
The Prince Charles Hospital upgrade is a conversion of the Paediatric ward to an Orthopaedic/Rehabilitation ward. Northbuild’s contract will see around 30 construction workers each day on the site during peak activity. Extensive works to the hospital began in late 2009 and will be due for completion mid 2010. The estimated two and half million dollar project will enhance health services for local Queenslanders and surrounding communities.
Spread over two levels, there is over considerable existing concrete that needs jack hammering to reduce floor levels and prepare for the new facility.
Contract work is progressing well now and Northbuild is anticipating the first stage handover in early January. The project cost is approximately $2.5million with an expected project completion date of March 2010.
The Paediatric ward was relocated to allow Northbuild to commence demolition work. Demolition work was a careful meticulous process to minimise the disruption to the sections of the hospital. We have separated 3 stages of demolition work to achieve this minimum disruption. This was a big challenge as hospital could not tolerate the noise and vibration of Jackhammers. Therefore we were allowed to do jack hammering only on Saturdays. This was slowing down the demolition process.
The client on this project is Queensland Health and the Project Management teams are coordinated by Project Services and The Capworks Group. Northbuild Senior Project Manager, Chand Weerasinghe heads a team of four - Dion Rowland as Site Manager, Ranjith Ananda as site Clerk, Russel Hughes and Chris Purkis as Work Place Health and Safety Officers.
Along with the practical aspects of the building, the attractive and original design by PDT Architecture Pty Ltd is sure to establish new boundaries in public works projects.
Northbuild is a privately owned commercial construction company with offices in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. The company’s founder and Managing Director, Paul Boddington, remains actively involved in running the company and holds a personal interest in every project and client.
